Since you're 〇〇, it's natural to 〇〇, right?
Haven't you heard people say, 'Since you're 〇〇, it's natural to 〇〇'? Like, 'Since you're the older sister, it's natural to just put up with it.' I really dislike that phrase. It feels like because of your position, something is just expected. 'Since you're on the central committee, it's natural you don't get late. It's natural you've submitted everything, right?' Sure, it's natural, but why is it natural for me when others aren't told that? I end up thinking... 'Because I'm important...'? 'Since you're the vice-president, it's natural you speak up. It's natural you don't miss meetings.' Yeah, that's true!!... But it's different. I want more praise... 'Since you're the conductor, it's natural you love singing. It's natural you're good at singing. It's natural you're good at conducting.' That's not it!! I might not love singing. I might not be good at singing. And my conducting skills are from practicing hard... Why don't people realize that? 'Since you're in the cheer squad, it's natural you're excited for the sports festival. It's natural you cheer loudly. It's natural you lead everyone.' Yeah... that's true, but... Why does it become natural??

It's truly frustrating when things are dismissed with the word 'obvious.' As someone responsible for an organization, I think it's the loneliest feeling when the efforts and struggles you've built up behind the scenes aren't recognized. Your hard work is by no means 'obvious.' There are people here who see it, so keep going.

AuthorI'm the vice-captain of the basketball team. I think if I weren't in that higher position, I'd just run away. But when people say, 'You're the vice-captain, so of course you have to,' it makes me feel down. I wonder if I'm pushing myself too hard. I tie myself down so I won't run away, but then I start hating that restraint and want to escape. Maybe I shouldn't tie myself down. But then I might run away. I don't want to run away. But I also hate this restraint. It makes me miserable. I tie myself down with various things and end up hurting myself. I don't know what to do.

I believe the word '当たり前' (atarimae - natural/obvious/expected) is something the person doing the action should say. Parents making food for their children is natural. However, I don't think children should say that it's natural to their parents. For the doer, it's natural. For the receiver, it's gratitude. I think this is the key to maintaining a good relationship. Even if the committee member says, 'It's natural not to be late because I'm a committee member,' I believe it's polite for someone who isn't a committee member to praise them by saying, 'Wow, that's amazing, you're so diligent!' 😊

My parents used to tell me that a lot too. "You're the oldest, so you have to be patient." Inside, I was screaming, "You're the one who gave birth to me as the oldest!"
