Our Household Rules
Do any of your homes have strange rules? In my house, Hatsumode (first shrine visit of the New Year) is forbidden. Not just for the first three days, but for the entire month of January. This is because it's believed that going to pay respects brings bad luck. In elementary school, the year I went for Hatsumode with friends late at night, my father had an accident and was hospitalized with a ruptured Achilles tendon. The year we went for Hatsumode to pray for my older brother's high school entrance exams, my grandfather passed away. Two years later, the year I went for Hatsumode for my own high school entrance exams, I was in a traffic accident. I had to use crutches from the very beginning of the school year. When my younger brother was taking his high school entrance exams, my father had an accident and ruptured the Achilles tendon on the opposite side, leading to his second hospitalization. Ever since then, the Hatsumode ban has been in effect. I think it's just a coincidence, but since we don't have any trouble not going for Hatsumode, we follow the rule.

Hearing that so many tough things happened makes my heart ache. Thinking about how scary things must have been for Mei makes me want to give her a big hug. I hope Mei's days are peaceful by following the rules!

At that point, it's not just about the New Year's visit, but maybe you should get an exorcism or something done?

Perhaps you're just not compatible with shrines. I always get a headache and feel dizzy when I visit shrines that enshrine Inari kami.

It's scary when things like that keep happening. If nothing happens by not going, then that's for the best.

Good morningâïž I saw a similar story on the YouTube channel 'Toshi Boys' before. That person was told they weren't compatible with a certain shrine and shouldn't go. I've seen similar stories on other channels like that and wondered if shrines have compatibility too?

It really is about compatibility... ð€ðŠ If it's the same hometown and the same shrine all the time... maybe that's why... ð Kunitsukami and Amatsukami also divide things greatly... ð By the way, I tend to feel unwell with the Amatsukami lineage ð¢ ... I checked the enshrined deities of shrines that were okay, and they were mostly Kunitsukami, so I'll check their websites before I go... ð
