A spiteful Kitsune.
There's an Inari shrine near my parents' house, and at Inari shrines, instead of guardian lions, there are Kitsune (fox statues) protecting the shrine entrance. The old men in the neighborhood used to say, "This Kitsune is mean and ill-tempered, so don't touch it or pray to it carelessly." They'd often tell the kids this during neighborhood children's association events. On the day of the elementary school sports competition held during summer vacation, my older sister, who's two years my senior, for some reason placed a bottle of Ramune soda in front of the Kitsune and prayed, "Please don't let me get hurt." Then, on the way from the community center to the school, she collided with a bicycle, and her younger brother, who was in first grade at the time and holding her hand, got injured. The sister fractured her elbow when she fell. The younger brother, because he was holding hands with his sister and also carrying a ball when they both fell, couldn't brace himself properly, hit his face, and lost a tooth. It seems the tooth was already loose, as an adult tooth eventually grew in properly, but the sight of his mouth covered in dirt and blood as he cried hysterically was terrifying when I was a child. The Ramune bottle was left there for a while because they said once offerings are removed, you don't know what might happen, and that was scary too. Where I live now is also rural, and my hometown isn't much different. There are quite a few superstitious stories, and I want to post about them, but my writing always ends up being too long.

Inari isn't just a deity that brings blessings... There are also Inari like this, huh? ∑(°∀°)

That's scary. I've heard that Inari deities are known for having strong attachments among animals. Your little brother is really pitiful. I wonder what the older sister was thinking, going to worship such a menacing Inari deity. It makes me a little scared, thinking maybe the Inari deity guided her...?

It seems like there might be a reason for them becoming mean... but they are still being enshrined, right? I'm curious... ( ̄0 ̄;

I don't know if there's a priest or anything, but maybe it became misanthropic because it wasn't properly enshrined? Or perhaps it was neglected and a wild fox entered it... maybe.

Isn't that just horror? ((()))

I just feel like it was either something they didn't like or something they hated. Maybe they actually had a more terrible experience at that ball game... 😢 Reading between the lines, it could also mean they intentionally got injured so they couldn't participate in that ball game to avoid getting hurt. Let sleeping dogs lie, good riddance.

Inari Okami will curse you if not properly enshrined, so those who only pray to the gods when it's convenient should not mess with Inari Okami. It's also not good to stop enshrining midway, so if you start, let's continue to enshrine them for as long as you live. If you can't do it, it's better not to get involved from the beginning. The gods also need to eat every day. Build a shrine, offer them food daily, and always be thankful and express your gratitude. There are people who only pray to the gods when they're in trouble, right? After being helped, how many people would return to give thanks? Even we humans wouldn't want to help someone who can't say 'please' and 'thank you', would we?
