Unexpected Skill Improvement

I was practicing level 29 and high-difficulty songs, finely adjusting the timing, and challenged Emerald Master. I almost got a full combo on my first try, but missed a flick and made a panicked mistake. Is it possible to be this close to success and miss out? I also feel like my skills have improved.
