A Common Ghost Story, But...

Reminded by the word 'fever,' this is a story my mother told me that she heard from her uncle, who had returned from the war, who heard it from an acquaintance. The uncle's acquaintance was a taxi driver. One night, he picked up a young woman at the entrance of a hospital. After driving her to the address she gave, the young woman went into the house and didn't come out for a long time. Having no choice, the driver went to the front of the house and smelled incense coming from inside... When the driver called out to the family and explained the situation, they tearfully said, 'My daughter died at the hospital. I brought her home, but her spirit must have lingered...' The driver was apparently shocked. He was paid the fare properly. They say the driver fell ill with a high fever for three days and three nights after returning home. It's a common taxi ghost story, but this is how my mother told it, having heard it from her uncle.
