August 16th

August 16th is a symbolic day in South Korean history when the true joy of liberation was finally fully realized and cheers of 'Manse' (hurray) erupted. Although the news of the Japanese Emperor's surrender and liberation arrived on August 15, 1945, the low radio penetration rate that day meant most citizens didn't know the exact situation. However, on the morning of August 16th, as a result of negotiations between Yeo Un-hyeong and the Governor-General, numerous anti-Japanese independence activists and political prisoners who were incarcerated in places like Seodaemun Prison were released all at once. As the prison gates opened, those released and countless crowds in Seoul and across the nation who heard the news rushed to the Gwanghwamun and Jongno areas, waving Taegeukgi flags and shouting 'Manse'. Amidst this massive 'Manse' parade and the cheers of reunion, our people could finally deeply feel that liberation from Japanese rule had become a reality.
