Plants Use Quantum Mechanics Too

Quantum mechanics might seem like something confined to cutting-edge physics labs, but in reality, the green plants around us are utilizing quantum mechanics every day. This happens during the process of 'photosynthesis'. When plant cells absorb light energy and transfer it to their reaction centers, if they were to randomly search for a path, the energy loss would be immense. However, light particles, through a state of 'quantum superposition', explore all possible paths simultaneously and find the most efficient, optimal route with a probability close to 100%. What physicists can barely maintain in extreme environments near absolute zero, plants perfectly control in the warm and complex natural world. Isn't it fascinating that even a blade of grass by the roadside is essentially functioning like a high-performance quantum computer?

Earth Science - Typhoons (2)

- Conditions for Typhoon Formation 1. Sea surface temperature above 27°C: Warm water generates water vapor, creating updrafts for low pressure. 2. Coriolis Force from Earth's Rotation: This is the fundamental force that causes the low-pressure system of a typhoon to rotate. It's difficult for typhoons to form at the equator because the Coriolis force is 0. They primarily form between 5 and 25 degrees latitude. 3. Lack of significant wind shear between upper and lower levels: Updrafts need to extend to the upper troposphere for a typhoon to gain strength. If they encounter strong upper-level winds like the westerlies, their power is disrupted. - Misconception about Typhoons: Typhoons are so powerful they can break through anything. No. They observe the existing air masses and move around their edges. The reason why typhoons this year didn't come to Korea and all went to China is that the North Pacific air mass developed to cover Japan and Korea, and even reached the Shandong Peninsula in China. With two strong air masses, like the double heat dome, blocking the way, there was no space for them to push through.

A Bridge Extended by 1 Meter

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, ended up being 1 meter longer than originally designed due to an earthquake during construction. During the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995, a magnitude 7.3 tremor struck the site where the main towers were being erected. This earthquake caused the seabed ground to shift, increasing the distance between the two towers by 1 meter. Although it was a crisis that threatened to halt construction from the beginning, civil engineers confirmed the structural safety and then modified the cable and deck designs on the spot to accommodate the increased distance, successfully completing the bridge. This is an anecdote that showcases the remarkable flexibility of civil engineering, where a major earthquake, instead of collapsing the bridge, actually made it 1 meter longer.

Roman Concrete

Why is Rome's Pantheon, built 2,000 years ago, still standing strong? The secret lies in its 'self-healing concrete' technology. Recent scientific research suggests that ancient Romans mixed quicklime at high temperatures when making concrete, leaving small lime clasts within it. When cracks form in the building and rainwater seeps in, these lime clasts react with the water, forming calcium carbonate crystals that fill the cracks themselves. Unlike modern concrete, which corrodes in just a few decades, ancient Roman structures have repaired themselves using rainwater as a nutrient, enduring for two millennia.

Earth Science - Earthquakes

Earthquake: A phenomenon where energy is released due to a large impact or fault slip underground. Magnitude: The total energy of an earthquake. Expressed to the first decimal place. Every 2-unit increase in magnitude multiplies the energy by 1000. In other words, a 1-unit increase in magnitude increases energy by 31.6 times, and a 0.2-unit increase approximately doubles the energy. Intensity: The measured strength at each observation point. Intensity is measured in whole numbers. Shaking is stronger closer to the epicenter and weaker further away. - Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale: Has 12 levels from I to XII. A concept that aligns intensity with earthquake damage. - Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) Seismic Intensity Scale: Has 10 levels: 1-4, and 5-7 (strong/weak). A concept based on instrumental seismic intensity (seismic acceleration). Originally, there was no distinction between strong and weak, but as earthquakes became stronger, the difference in damage for the same level became larger, leading to the introduction of strong/weak distinctions starting from intensity 5.

Free Beer for Life

Niels Bohr, the titan of quantum mechanics, received a bizarre yet charming gift after winning the Nobel Prize in Physics. Carlsberg, a Danish brewery, gifted him a house and connected it with a special pipe. This was a 'beer-only pipeline' directly linking their brewery to Bohr's kitchen. Thanks to this, Bohr could enjoy unlimited fresh beer anytime just by turning on the tap at home, for his entire life. The fact that the Nobel laureate's congratulatory gift was nothing less than 'infinite beer flowing from his kitchen tap' is a delightful and astonishing anecdote, as fascinating as quantum mechanics itself.

Railways - Track Gauge

Track Gauge: The distance between two rails. - Standard Gauge: 1435mm, adopted by 60% worldwide, Korea also uses standard gauge. - Narrow Gauge: 1067mm, 9% market share, used in Japan, Taiwan, etc. 1000mm, 7% market share, Southeast Asia, South America, Africa. Narrower than standard gauge, Construction costs are lower than standard gauge, allowing for faster construction. - Broad Gauge: 1520mm, 14% market share, Russia, former Soviet regions, Mongolia. 1676mm, 10% market share, India, Pakistan. Superior in transport capacity and running stability compared to standard gauge. Japan's Shinkansen was also developed with standard gauge due to the lack of running stability in existing narrow gauges, especially at high speeds. However, the reason high-speed rail was not developed with broad gauge, which has superior high-speed running stability, is due to economic issues such as maintenance costs and construction standards. Global compatibility (60% market share) is another reason.

Earthquake-Resistant Design

Seismic Resistance (내진): Literally means withstanding vibrations. This can be achieved by thickening concrete or reinforcing it with densely packed rebar to enhance durability. Existing buildings can also be retrofitted for seismic resistance by adding diagonal external columns. Seismic Damping (제진): Absorbing vibrations. This involves installing devices like dampers (similar principle to car shock absorbers) to absorb impact. An upgraded version of this design, like in Taipei 101, uses a counterweight and dampers that work together. The counterweight absorbs the energy of the building's sway, allowing for a design that intentionally moves. Seismic Isolation (면진): Preventing direct transmission of vibrations. This is done by installing special flooring materials, such as rubber pads, at the foundation level during construction. Seismic Control (차진): A theoretical method of completely suspending a structure in the air. This has not been practically realized.

The Light Found in Urine

The bizarre attempts of alchemists trying to create gold opened the doors to modern chemistry. In the 17th century, a German alchemist named Hennig Brand believed that because human urine was yellow, it must contain hidden gold. He collected a staggering 5,500 liters of urine and repeatedly performed outlandish experiments, boiling and distilling it. Naturally, no gold was found, but instead, he discovered a mysterious substance that glowed blue in the dark: 'Phosphorus,' the first element artificially discovered by humankind. Thus, the alchemist's urine-boiling, born from a ridiculous misconception, unexpectedly became a great first step in modern chemistry.

The Snail That Lives On Its Head

There's an animal that dramatically severs its own neck when infected by parasites. It's a sea slug called 'Elysia'. When this slug becomes heavily infested with parasites, it separates its head from its body. The heart and internal organs remain in the discarded body and die, but the detached head crawls away and survives. What's even more astonishing is that the head, left alone, gains energy through photosynthesis using chloroplasts it consumed, and in just a few weeks, it perfectly regenerates a new body, including its heart. It's an incredible life force that discards its entire body without hesitation for survival, starting anew from its head.
