I'm embarrassed, but I still can't hold chopsticks properly

I've been using the 'X' way of holding chopsticks for about 20 years. Nowadays, people say 'Who cares how you hold chopsticks!', but since it's considered a basic part of upbringing, I tried practicing at home while watching YouTube. But the tips of the chopsticks? They keep slipping, or the length changes when I try to grab something ㅠㅠ Now that I'm getting married... I'm worried that if I can't hold chopsticks properly at important company dinners, my parents will be criticized more than I will, so I want to correct it. * My father strictly trained my brother, who is two years older, to hold chopsticks correctly, but I guess it was hard for him to be harsh with me, his daughter, back then 🤣 So I recently bought and tried adult-sized training chopsticks. Maybe because my middle finger is long, if I try to avoid pain, my middle finger gets in the way and I can't hold them properly... and if I try not to let it get in the way, the part connecting my thumb and wrist strains too much, making it tingly ㅠㅠ Starting today, I'll use the training chopsticks... and try to get better. 🌸Please leave photos of your chopstick grip in the comments so I can learn from you!🌸

Sigh... I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it, but I'm not good at picking up beans either... If there's seasoned beans (kongjaban), I just eat them with a spoon 😭😭

I got into bad habits when I was young 😭 I still hold my chopsticks together like that. Even though I got scolded for it, I didn't fix it, and now I sometimes wonder why I was like that back then lol

It's okay... If you look at old Joseon Dynasty paintings, even the nobility held chopsticks in an X-shape, not much different from today~ Besides, if I followed dining etiquette and manners, it doesn't matter if my chopstick skills are good or bad!

I changed mine in my early 20s too. I used to hold chopsticks like a pencil, but then switched to the standard way. We even had a bet at work about who could chopsticks better. ㅋㅋ

Wow, it's cool that you're trying to fix it 👍 Who cares if you hold your chopsticks differently! Everyone does things their own way 😊

You'll get the hang of it quickly with practice! Keep at it~ I used to do it the wrong way until my early 20s and then practiced to fix it~!

I can't do it properly, but I can eat everything. I do want to try using training chopsticks though, wondering if they're effective ㅠ

My kids practiced chopsticks with Haribo gummies when they were young, so they're really good at it. But honestly, I, the parent, am not that great at it. Sometimes I think about changing, but it's more comfortable to go back to my old ways^^ I hope you succeed with your practice! Fighting!!! \●/

Still, your effort to correct it is commendable! Do you have to be good at using chopsticks to eat? DJ DOC ruined it all

I also hold my chopsticks like a pencil, and it's hard to fix even when I try ㅠㅠ My fingers feel like they're going to cramp ㅠ

Aww ㅜㅠ I can't do it the standard way either.. but I fixed it enough so it doesn't look awkward to others. Still, I don't have much strength so I can't grab it well 😂

My chopstick grip is a bit weird. People say it looks awkward at first glance. I hold them like I'm holding a pencil. My fingers don't even go between the chopsticks. That's why I don't have much control at the tips and it looks clumsy. They say it looks like an awkward way of using chopsticks... Because it doesn't look drastically different at first glance, it's even harder to fix.

Honestly, I think the 11-character chopstick grip is a remnant of Japanese occupation. Unless you're holding them really weirdly in reverse, I don't see it as a problem. It'd be nice if people were good at using chopsticks, but I've never met someone who criticizes chopstick technique and also follows grammar rules, the 'apjonbeop' (a specific Korean grammar rule), or other minor etiquette. They probably only know about chopsticks, which is why they point fingers or badmouth others so carelessly.

I can do the standard chopstick grip too, but it feels like they might slip past my knuckles, so I rest the chopsticks on the pads of my middle and ring fingers. It's a bit unconventional, but it's a method that doesn't really show. ㅋㅋ Later, I realized my mom does it the same way.

If you pay attention for about a month, you'll be able to correct it! It really comes down to habit. I'm one of those who fixed their chopstick grip. I corrected mine in high school by consciously trying, and I finally understood why adults always talked about how people hold their chopsticks. Now that I'm married and have kids, I notice how people at work hold theirs. I don't say anything, but it does feel like a basic part of upbringing. My son is also currently being taught how to use chopsticks properly..ㅠㅠ You can do it, fighting!
