Element Story - Zinc Edition
Zinc is an element with atomic number 30, belonging to Group 12 of the periodic table and is a transition metal. It is bluish-white and a relatively hard metal that can be easily worked depending on the temperature. In air, a protective film forms on its surface, making it relatively resistant to corrosion, and galvanizing, which coats iron with zinc, is widely used to prevent iron from rusting. Zinc is used to make brass by alloying with copper and is also utilized in the manufacturing of batteries, die-cast parts, and various chemical products. In living organisms, it acts as an essential trace element necessary for the function of various enzymes, protein synthesis, and cell growth. In nature, it primarily exists in the form of sulfide minerals such as sphalerite and is often found alongside minerals like lead and silver. In the universe, it is produced through processes such as stellar nucleosynthesis and supernova explosions, and the isotopic distribution of zinc provides important information for studying the chemical evolution of stars and galaxies. In particular, zinc is a crucial element used to understand the nucleosynthesis processes of elements heavier than iron.
