Element Story - Yttrium Edition
Yttrium is an element with atomic number 39, belonging to Group 3 of the periodic table as a transition metal. It's a silvery-white metal that is relatively light and resistant to corrosion, naturally occurring in minerals alongside other rare-earth elements. Yttrium can form stable compounds even at high temperatures, making it useful in the production of ceramics and heat-resistant materials. Notably, yttrium oxide is utilized in phosphors and laser materials, and yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) is employed to create powerful solid-state lasers. Furthermore, superconductors containing yttrium exhibit properties where electrical resistance nearly disappears at very low temperatures, finding applications in superconductivity research. The radioactive isotope yttrium-90 is also used in medicine for the treatment of certain diseases. In space, yttrium is generated through processes like stellar nucleosynthesis and neutron capture. Analyzing the content of yttrium and other rare-earth elements can aid in studying the environments where stars and planets formed.
