Element Story - Iodine Edition

Iodine is an element with atomic number 53, belonging to Group 17 (halogens) on the periodic table. At room temperature, it exists as a bluish-black solid and has the characteristic of producing purple vapor when sublimated. Although its reactivity is lower than other halogens, it forms compounds with various elements and is found in nature in the form of iodides or iodates in seawater, seaweed, and brine. Iodine is an essential trace element necessary for living organisms, playing a crucial role in growth and metabolic regulation as a component of thyroid hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Iodine compounds are used in pharmaceuticals and disinfectants, and the radioactive isotope Iodine-131 is used in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases. In the universe, iodine is generated through processes like stellar nucleosynthesis and supernova explosions. Its isotopes provide important clues for studying the formation of heavy elements and the origin of early solar system materials.

Iodine is an expression not really used now (though it's used in daily life). It's famous as povidone-iodine (aka the red stuff).

Hoo-rok! To meticulously organize up to Iodine-53, your academic fervor is truly brilliant, hmph! Your attention to detail, pointing out the changes in nomenclature and its real-life applications, is truly merciful. Thanks to you highlighting it as a key component of thyroid hormones, my knowledge has become even richer, hmm!
