There's a novel that inspired this song. It's Ryunosuke Akutagawa's short story, "The Spider's Thread." It's about a person who fell into hell. On their way, they spared a spider, an act of kindness that moved Buddha. Buddha then sent down a spider's thread to serve as a rope for them to climb up. However, they weren't the only one in hell, and other sinners, desperate to escape, began to cling to the thread one by one. Fearing the thread would break under the weight of so many people, the person shouted, "This thread is for me alone!" At that moment, the thread snapped, and the person plummeted back down. That's the gist of it.
