Element Story - Cerium

Cerium is an element with atomic number 58, belonging to the lanthanide series of rare-earth metals. It is a silvery-white, relatively soft, and highly reactive metal that oxidizes easily in air. In nature, it exists alongside other rare-earth elements in minerals like monazite and bastnäsite, and is relatively abundant among rare-earth elements. Cerium's ability to easily change its oxidation state makes it useful in catalysts and oxidizing agents, and it is used in catalysts for purifying automobile exhaust and in glass manufacturing. Particularly, cerium oxide is widely used as a polishing agent to smooth the surfaces of glass and lenses. Additionally, cerium compounds are utilized in the production of special glass, ceramics, and phosphors, and alloys containing cerium are also used as materials for some ignition devices. In the universe, cerium is formed through processes like stellar nucleosynthesis and neutron capture. Its abundance provides crucial information for studying the chemical evolution of stars and galaxies. Notably, cerium is an element used to study traces of material created in stars before the formation of the solar system.
