Element Story - Samarium
Samarium is an element with atomic number 62, belonging to the lanthanide group of rare-earth metals. It has a silvery-white appearance, is relatively hard, and slowly oxidizes in air. In nature, it exists alongside other rare-earth elements in minerals like monazite and bastnรคsite. Samarium is used to create samarium-cobalt magnets, which possess strong magnetic properties. These magnets maintain their magnetism relatively well even at high temperatures, making them useful in motors, sensors, and aerospace equipment. Additionally, samarium compounds are used in the manufacturing of special glass and ceramics. The radioactive isotope samarium-153 emits beta rays and is utilized in radiopharmaceuticals to alleviate pain from certain cancers. In space, samarium is formed through processes like stellar nucleosynthesis and neutron capture. The isotopic ratios of samarium provide crucial information for studying stellar evolution and the materials present during the formation of the solar system.
