Element Story - Hafnium Edition
Hafnium is an element with atomic number 72, belonging to Group 4 of the periodic table and is a transition metal. It is a silvery-gray, hard, and corrosion-resistant metal with a high melting point, making it stable even at high temperatures. In nature, it coexists with zirconium in minerals like zircon due to similar chemical properties and is separated during the purification process of zirconium. Hafnium is used as a control rod material in nuclear reactors because it absorbs thermal neutrons very well, playing a crucial role in regulating the speed of nuclear fission reactions. Additionally, hafnium oxide is a material with a high dielectric constant, utilized in semiconductor insulation layers and electronic components. Alloys containing hafnium are resistant to high temperatures and corrosion, finding use in aerospace and components for high-temperature environments. The decay relationship between the hafnium isotope hafnium-176 and lutetium-176 is used in lutetium-hafnium dating to help determine the formation times of rocks and minerals. In the universe, it is formed through processes like stellar nucleosynthesis and neutron capture.
