Platinum is an element with atomic number 78, belonging to Group 10 in the periodic table. It is a transition metal and a platinum group metal. It has a silvery-white luster, high density, and is hard, yet exhibits excellent ductility and malleability. It is relatively stable in air and water and does not react with most acids, making it highly resistant to corrosion. It also maintains its stability at high temperatures. Platinum plays a crucial role as a catalyst that promotes chemical reactions, utilized in catalytic converters for purifying automotive exhaust gases, petroleum refining, and the chemical industry. It is also used in electrical contacts, laboratory equipment, medical devices, and jewelry. Cisplatin, a platinum compound, is known as an important anticancer drug used in the treatment of certain cancers. It is very rare in nature, primarily found alongside other platinum group elements in nickel and copper ores. In the universe, it is formed through stellar nucleosynthesis, supernova explosions, and neutron star mergers. Particularly, very heavy elements like platinum are associated with the rapid neutron capture process, known as the r-process.
