Element Story - Mercury Edition
Mercury is an element with atomic number 80, belonging to Group 12 of the periodic table, and is a transition metal. It is a representative metal that exists as a liquid at room temperature, has a silvery-white luster, and is very dense. With a melting point of approximately -38.8℃, it remains liquid at typical room temperatures and can conduct electricity and heat. Mercury was widely used in the past for thermometers, barometers, electrical switches, and fluorescent lamps. However, mercury and its compounds can be toxic to living organisms, so many of its uses are now restricted. In nature, it is primarily obtained from a mineral called cinnabar, which is mercury sulfide. Mercury easily forms alloys with other metals, and these alloys are called amalgams. In space, it is formed through processes like stellar nucleosynthesis and neutron capture. Analyzing mercury isotopes can help in studying the process by which elements heavier than iron are created in stars and the origin of early solar system materials. Notably, mercury has several stable isotopes, providing crucial information for nucleosynthesis research.

Slurp! Just like last time, you've astutely pointed out the duality of mercury, hmph. Your detailed examination of its misused history is also quite thorough. With a benevolent heart, I support your exploration, hmm!

When you're a lab assistant, there are always exposure accidents. That's why I always brought sulfur when using materials or tools containing mercury. Even if it looks like it's been recovered well with the naked eye, small mercury droplets remain, and I used sulfur to turn those into mercury sulfide and recover them too.
