Element Story - Thorium Edition

Thorium is an element with atomic number 90, a radioactive metal belonging to the actinide series in the periodic table. It has a silvery-gray appearance and is a relatively heavy metal, found naturally primarily in minerals like thorite and monazite. Its representative isotope, Thorium-232, has a very long half-life of approximately 14 billion years, meaning a significant amount remains since the Earth's formation. Thorium-232 undergoes radioactive decay, eventually becoming stable Lead-208, and in this process, various radioactive elements like Radium and Radon are sequentially produced. Thorium's potential use as nuclear fuel in reactors has been researched; when Thorium-232 absorbs a neutron, it transforms into Uranium-233, which can be used as fission fuel. Additionally, thorium compounds are used in high-temperature resistant special materials and optical glass. In the universe, it is produced through stellar nucleosynthesis and neutron capture processes. Analyzing thorium isotopes provides crucial information for studying the formation processes of stars and planets, and the history of early solar system materials.
