Element Story - Curium

Curium is an element with atomic number 96, a radioactive metal belonging to the actinide series in the periodic table. It is known as a silvery-white metal, and all of its isotopes are radioactive. It is rarely found in nature and is artificially produced, mainly by colliding particles with the nuclei of elements like plutonium or americium. Curium-244, a representative isotope, has a half-life of about 18.1 years and emits strong alpha rays. Curium is an important element for studying radiation and nuclear reactions, and some isotopes are used as target materials for creating other transuranic elements. Furthermore, Curium-242 and Curium-244 generate significant heat upon decay, leading to their use in radioisotope thermoelectric generator research. The name Curium was given to honor Marie and Pierre Curie, who made significant contributions to radioactivity research. In the universe, it might be related to the process of heavy elements being created and then decaying in extreme environments such as stellar nucleosynthesis and neutron star mergers, but due to the short lifespan of its isotopes, curium is not currently accumulated in nature.

Named after the surname of the Curie couple who lived long despite so much radiation exposure...
