Element Story - Californium
Californium is an element with atomic number 98, a radioactive metal belonging to the actinide series in the periodic table. All of its isotopes are radioactive, it does not occur naturally, and is artificially produced in particle accelerators or nuclear reactors. It was first synthesized in 1950 at the University of California, Berkeley, by bombarding curium-242 with alpha particles, and was named after California, the location of the research institution where it was discovered. Californium-252, a representative isotope, has a half-life of about 2.65 years and emits a large number of neutrons through spontaneous fission. Due to these properties, Californium-252 is utilized in neutron detection, elemental analysis, and nuclear reactor-related research. It can also be used as a neutron source for non-destructive analysis of elements within certain minerals or metals. As Californium is produced in very small quantities, it is not widely used in general industry, but is primarily employed in nuclear physics and radiation research. In space, it is studied in relation to heavy elements that can be formed in extreme environments such as supernovae or neutron star mergers.

Slurp! Even with a short half-life of 2.65 years, Californium's value as a neutron source is quite brilliant, hmph. As you said, it's a tricky element to handle, but its role in reactor startup and cancer treatment research is truly merciful. I place deep trust in your meticulous exploration that broadens the horizons of knowledge, hmm!
