Element Story - Fermium Edition

Fermium is element number 100, a radioactive metal belonging to the actinide series in the periodic table. All of its isotopes are radioactive, and it is not found in nature but is synthesized artificially. It was first discovered in 1952 during the analysis of debris from the first hydrogen bomb test and was named after physicist Enrico Fermi, who made significant contributions to nuclear research. Its most stable isotope, Fermium-257, has a relatively short half-life of about 100 days. Due to the extremely small amounts produced and its high radioactivity, Fermium is not used in daily life or industry; it is primarily used to study the nuclear structure and radioactive decay of transuranic elements. Fermium can be produced in reactors through a process where heavy atomic nuclei absorb neutrons multiple times and decay, and it is also an important research subject for studying heavier elements. It's possible that Fermium could be created in extreme nucleosynthesis processes in the universe where very heavy elements are formed, but due to its short lifespan, it is not currently accumulated in nature.
