Element Story - Dubnium
Dubnium is element 105, a superheavy element belonging to group 5 of the periodic table. All of its isotopes are radioactive, it does not occur naturally, and is synthesized artificially in particle accelerators. There was a dispute over its discovery and naming when both the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Soviet Union, and American researchers reported its synthesis in the 1960s. The current name was given in honor of Dubna, Russia. Dubnium is not utilized in daily life or industry due to the extremely small number of atoms produced and its short half-life; it is primarily used to study the nuclear structure and chemical properties of superheavy elements. The half-life of dubnium-268, its longest-lived known isotope, is about a day, but there is experimental uncertainty regarding the exact value. Chemically, it is expected to exhibit properties similar to vanadium, niobium, and tantalum in the same group 5, but relativistic effects may significantly influence electron motion due to the strong electric field of the very heavy atomic nucleus.
