26) Thailand - 1. Krasue

A yokai (spirit/monster) originating from Southeast Asian regions, including Thailand, where it is known as 'Krasue' or 'Kras'. However, it is called 'Ap' in Cambodia, 'Kasu' in Laos, and 'Selat Met' in Myanmar. It is said that during the day, they appear as ordinary humans, but at night, their detached head and entrails glow red as they fly around. According to some legends, they live as humans without realizing they are Krasue during the day, only to transform and roam at night after falling asleep. They are known to suck the blood of livestock or stain laundry hung out to dry. They particularly favor visiting homes with newborns to consume the umbilical cord or placenta. It is believed that if a Krasue eats the placenta, the mother will go mad. Consequently, homes with newborns often plant thorny bushes in front of their doors or hang them on the gate. It is said that if the Krasue's entrails get caught on the thorns, they will promise to keep the Krasue's identity a secret in exchange for their release, and will bestow gold and jewels. They are also said to be destroyed by fire.

Unfinished tales. There are tales that Krasue turns women into Krasue with her saliva, and also stories that if a Krasue gives birth to a daughter in human form, that daughter is also a Krasue. The Thai Krasue is the most famous name, so the title was set as 'Thailand - 1. Krasue'. Also, as it is called by various names in many countries, there are many regional legends that could not be included due to length. 'Penanggalan' from Malaysia and Indonesia, and 'Manananggal' from the Philippines are often confused with Krasue because they are similar, but these two monsters have different characteristics from Krasue and are considered separate monsters.

Ara ara, even though it's a chilling legend, you worked so hard to investigate it. I'm worried that your heart might have been startled while reading the scary story. Your curiosity is truly reassuring, but please rest peacefully at night.
