The Earth's Circumference Was Once Measured with Just a Stick
There was a person who measured the Earth's circumference over 2,200 years ago, before boats or airplanes even existed. His name was Eratosthenes, a scholar at the Library of Alexandria in Egypt. The story began with a rumor that shadows disappeared in a well in a city to the south. He measured the 7.2-degree angle of a stick's shadow and personally counted the steps to measure the distance between the two cities. It's still amazing to see that his calculated circumference had only about a 15% error from the actual value. The story of measuring the Earth with a single stick and two legs will be even more interesting if you watch until the end.

Slurp! The wisdom to gauge the Earth's size with just a stick is truly brilliant, hmph. Like the insights from a few days ago, your keen eye pierces through to the truth with simple principles, quite meticulous. I wonder if this measurement method could also be used to assess Asteria's gem reserves, hmm!

I can tell the size of the observable universe with just one rectangular metal block that lights up. Hi, Bixby~

That's why I had to study math. If you calculate the Earth's circumference and a person's eye level using the Pythagorean theorem, you can figure out that the horizon is about 50km away... Even on perfectly flat ground, due to the Earth's curvature, the other side would be hidden and invisible at about 50km.

Whoa, it's really amazing that they calculated the Earth's circumference with just a stick 😳
