Turkey's Underground City
This underground city was made possible by tuff, a rock that is soft when excavated but hardens when exposed to air. Vertical shafts served as ventilation and wells, and the circular stone doors could only be opened from the inside. It's estimated that up to 20,000 people could hide and live there. The idea of building a city downwards, not upwards, is amazing.
