The 1904 St. Louis Olympic marathon is considered one of the most bizarre true stories in official sports history. This race, held under scorching 32°C (90°F) heat on dusty dirt roads, was a complete disaster. 1. The organizers' dangerous experiment: At the time, the organizers wanted to study the effects of 'intentional dehydration' on the human body and set up only one water station along the 32km+ course under the blazing sun.
