33) Korea - 14. Jangsan Tiger
This is a mysterious creature said to appear in Jangsan, Busan, South Korea. Despite its name, there are reports of sightings not only in the Yeongnam region but also in Gangwon-do, Chungcheong-do, Gyeonggi-do, and even in Hwanghae-do and Hamgyeong-do provinces. While its appearance varies across different media, common descriptions include glowing eyes, crimson skin, fine and long white fur like silk, and a tiger's skeletal structure. It can mimic natural sounds like flowing water, rain, and wind, and can imitate the cries of various animals as well as human voices, which it uses to lure and devour people. It is persistent and tenacious, relentlessly pursuing a person it targets until the end, but it is said to stop pursuing once the person leaves its territory. There are also claims that it dislikes the color red, loud noises, crowded places, and burning smells (especially the smell of burning hair). In reality, it's an urban legend that gained popularity through internet communities in the early 2000s. It doesn't exist in any Busan folktale collections or any other folk legends, and many residents of Jangsan claim to know nothing about it.

AuthorUnfinished stories. In 2020, a huge buzz was created when an elementary school student filmed a white creature climbing Jangsan Mountain, claiming it was the Jangsan Tiger. However, it was later revealed to be a local resident wearing a white raincoat and hiking. Just as the Jangsan Tiger is said to lure its prey with sounds, real tigers are also known to mimic the mating calls or warning sounds of their prey animals to lure them closer. It is said that tigers actually lived on Jangsan Mountain. There are place names related to tigers on Jangsan, such as Beomgul and Beomjeongol. There's also a legend that women went to Jangsan to pick wild vegetables and found a tiger cub. They were startled by the roar of the mother tiger that appeared immediately and ran away, only to find a basket of wild vegetables and their shoes placed in front of their house the next day as a thank you for playing with her cub.
