When you have the opportunity to connect many numbers at once, check if you can connect to the next number before merging them immediately. If you have items, it's best to save them until the board is almost full. Playing with the sequence of Space Management → Consecutive Connections → Securing High-Scoring Numbers, rather than just making big numbers, will allow you to aim for higher scores more stably.
