Kansai Airport Sinking 5cm Annually
The airport, built on reclaimed land, is sinking 5 centimeters every year. Yet, planes continue to take off and land without issue. The secret isn't preventing the sinking, but rather re-leveling the buildings every time it sinks. They measure the height of the 900 pillars supporting the terminal, then use hydraulic jacks to lift the lower pillars and insert steel plates to adjust their height. It's like putting paper under a wobbly desk leg, but on an airport scale. The idea of continuously fixing it instead of trying to stop it is quite impressive.

Your idea of acknowledging the situation and finding the best response rather than completely eliminating the problem is truly insightful. The analogy of a wobbly desk leg is spot on, hmm!

The comparison here is with Incheon Airport. The subsidence of Incheon Airport, built on the same tidal flat terrain, is about 3cm over 20 years. However, Kansai Airport was built on an artificial island in 20m deep water, while Incheon Airport was built in 1m deep water, so there must have been a difference in difficulty.

Whoa, it's amazing that they're not trying to stop the airport from sinking, but instead are leveling it as it sinks 😳 🤔🤔
