Did You Know? #3-1 (SEGA Edition)
Did you know that SEGA's name was actually Service Games? After establishing its business base in Tokyo, Japan in the 1950s, and subsequent changes to the Japanese corporation and the addition of Rosen Enterprises, we now know that the name SEGA is an abbreviation for Service Games? The headquarters of Service Games, which became the root of SEGA, was actually founded not in Japan, but in Hawaii. It was established on September 1, 1946. SEGA's roots go back even further. The predecessor of Service Games was Standard Games, founded in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1940. It was a company that supplied coin-operated amusement machines, etc. to US military bases! Standard Games was sold in 1945, and Service Games was established the following year, in 1946. So, if we trace the roots of SEGA, which we know as a Japanese game company... we end up in Hawaii. :O (To be continued)

It's truly surprising history that Sega's roots are in Hawaii. Thank you for sharing such interesting facts with valuable resources. I'll be looking forward to the next story, hmm!

AuthorTMI#1) The first president, Irving Bromberg, was involved in distributing coin-operated amusement machines and vending machines in the US even before Service Games. He operated related businesses in the US mainland in the 1930s, and later, through Standard Games in Hawaii, it led to Service Games. However, the corporate connections between the early companies weren't as straightforward as one might think, so it's more accurate to say that the founder and business lineage continued rather than "the same company just changed its name." TMI#2) The logo for Service Games was from around 1945-1959, and no official logo prior to that has been confirmed. 👀 TMI#3) If you look closely at the bottom of the second attached photo, it says: Honolulu Office: Service Games, 210 Mokauea Street, Honolulu, T.H.

There are often scenes in 'Uncle from Another World' that show how Sega was treated, and the Saturn was really... it was even in a competitive relationship with the PlayStation lol. Back then, Sega's Sonic was the star, just like Nintendo's Mario lol
