6. 'Yeyo' vs. 'Eyo' (Korean grammar)
1. 'Yeyo' is a contraction of 'ieyo,' and the usage depends on whether the preceding word has a final consonant (batchim). If there's a batchim, use 'ieyo'; if not, use 'yeyo'. Ex) Haksaeng-ieyo (student-is), Chaek-ieyo (book-is), Chingu-yeyo (friend-is), Sagwa-yeyo (apple-is) 1) Exception: 'Anieyo' 'Anida' (to not be) has no batchim, so one might think 'anigeyo' should be used. However, due to the conjugation of 'anida,' 'anieyo' is correct. Ex) Sasil-i anieyo (It's not true), Haksaeng-i anieyo (It's not a student) 2. 'Geoyeyo' 'Geo' is the colloquial form of 'geot' (thing/fact), and it's a contraction of 'geosieyo'. Ex) Hal geoyeyo (I/you/they will do it) 3. 'Mwoyeyo' 'Mwo' is the colloquial form of 'mueot' (what), and it's a contraction of 'mueosieyo'. Ex) Ireum-i mwoyeyo? (What's your name?) 4. Conclusion If there's a batchim, use 'ieyo'; if not, use 'yeyo'. However, 'anieyo' is an exception and is correct. It's not difficult if you just remember this.
