The villagers fear it's the work of the vengeful spirit of Kang Gak-ju, who died unjustly seven years prior. As the investigation progresses, the ugly secrets of the island's residents are revealed. Despite receiving an R rating (restricted for minors), it surpassed its break-even point by drawing 2.27 million viewers at the time. It received critical acclaim as a masterpiece, winning awards at the Chunsa Film Art Awards and Baeksang Arts Awards. However, the film is divisive due to its graphic depiction of five types of Joseon-era punishments, including dismemberment (거열) and banishment by boiling (팽형).
