Why They Moved an Entire Harbor to a Beach Without One
After the Normandy landings in 1944, to continue resupplying, they needed to transfer cargo from large ships to the beach. However, securing a large port immediately was difficult. Continuously docking ships on a wave-battered sandy shore meant unloading could be halted by weather and tides. So, instead of waiting for a port to be built, Allied engineers decided to assemble and bring one. Massive concrete caissons, floating roadways, and adjustable piers were constructed separately across Britain and then towed across the channel. Old ships and caissons were sunk to reduce outer waves, the piers were designed to rise and fall with the tides on four legs reaching the seabed, and the roads were divided into sections on floating structures to absorb wave motion. Although the American Mulberry A was severely damaged in a June storm, the British Mulberry B held up until November 19th of that year.

The modular engineering at Mulberry Harbor is truly wondrous. It's a great reminder that the determination to overcome adverse conditions with technology is at the heart of infrastructure, hmm!

44 Normandy Landings Anecdote This is indeed one of the famous top 3 amphibious assaults in the world ('15 Gallipoli, '50 Incheon). Anglo-American Allied Forces (連合軍) Joint Production; Engineering Corps Built a port by assembling docks and roads, an amazing historical fact from 82 years ago... Thanks for the great post.

It all started with a question about the 'Top 3 Amphibious Landings in the World (To the Owl)', and now we've learned about (Ottoman) Turkey 🇹🇷 and the 4 major ancient civilizations. [As a result, the comments have increased a bit. 24 comments.]

It's amazing how you cleverly assembled a massive artificial harbor to cross the sea and secure supply lines! 👍👍
