Did You Know? #3-3 (SEGA Edition)
[Continued from 3-2!] SEGA's root, Service Games. Japan, was more than just an importer. They expanded their business to include sales, rentals, and maintenance of amusement machines, as well as manufacturing and overseas exports 👍 And in 1960, the lineage that directly leads to the 'SEGA' we know today officially began. If what we've looked at so far was the 'root of SEGA', then from now on, we can consider it the 'beginning of SEGA'. Service Games Japan's operations were reorganized, dividing into Nihon Goraku Bussan, responsible for sales and rentals, and Nihon Kikai Seizo, responsible for manufacturing. And between these two, the company that directly leads to today's SEGA was Nihon Goraku Bussan. ...However, the name 'SEGA' that we are familiar with first prominently appeared from the manufacturing side. In July of the same year, Nihon Kikai Seizo released the domestically produced jukebox, SEGA 1000. The name was derived from SEGA, an abbreviation of Service Games. (To be continued)

AuthorTMI#1) The SEGA 1000 from 1960 wasn't a game console, but a jukebox. It sounds very similar to the SG-1000 from 1983, but they're completely different things, with about a 23-year gap between them. TMI#2) Jukeboxes back then weren't just simple music players; they also served as a music source to attract customers and a way to generate extra income for stores!? 💴 TMI#3) Official SEGA Sammy materials also state that the SEGA 1000 is the first instance where the abbreviation 'SEGA' was used 👍
