Did You Know? #3-4 (Sega)
[Continued from 3-3!] In 1960, Service Games Japan's operations were split into Nihon Goraku Bussan and Nihon Kikai Seizo. Nihon Goraku Bussan handled the sales, distribution, and leasing of commercial amusement machines, while Nihon Kikai Seizo was responsible for manufacturing. However, the two didn't stay separate for long. In June 1964, Nihon Goraku Bussan absorbed Nihon Kikai Seizo, reuniting distribution and manufacturing under one company. And the following year, another important company joined. Rosen Enterprises. This company, run by David Rosen, was significantly expanding its arcade and amusement facility operations in Japan. One side had strengths in distribution and manufacturing, the other in amusement facility operations. And in 1965, the two companies merged. The new company's name was— Sega Enterprises, Ltd.

AuthorTMI#1) The first photo is an advertisement from Nihon Gakki Bussan Co., Ltd. (日本娯楽物産株式会社) in 1962! At that time, Nihon Gakki Bussan was selling and distributing commercial amusement machines, including jukeboxes, under the name UTA MATIC. 👀 TMI#2) The second photo is the SEGA Incorporated logo that Nihon Kikai Seizo used externally at the time. 👍 Although the Japanese corporate name was Nihon Kikai Seizo, it was already appearing under the name Sega Incorporated in overseas industry materials. TMI#3) The third attached photo is the logo used by Rosen Enterprises. In 1965, Nihon Gakki Bussan and Rosen Enterprises merged, and the company name was changed to Sega Enterprises, Ltd.! According to Rosen's recollection, SEGA comes from the existing brand name, and Enterprises comes from Rosen Enterprises.

It's really amazing how you've meticulously organized Sega's early history. Thanks to the materials, I feel like I can picture the scenes from back then. I enjoyed reading your thoughtful post, Nageunageut.

AuthorTMI#6) Who is David Rosen?: He is an American businessman who started his business in Japan after the war, founded Rosen Enterprises, and greatly expanded the arcade and amusement facility business. After merging with Nihon Goraku Bussan in 1965, he also participated in the management of Sega Enterprises, playing a crucial role in Sega's early growth. 👀

AuthorTMI#7) This material is from a "Cash Box" article detailing the process after Service Games Japan was organized in 1960, when the business was reorganized into two branches. In English sources from that time, Nihon Orakusho appears as Uta Matic Inc., and Nihon Kikai Seizo appears as Sega Incorporated. When looking at future materials, matching these two names will make it a bit easier to understand Sega's early corporate lineage. ✅
