Where does the water that Seoulites use and discard end up?
There's a place where all the water that Seoulites use and discard throughout the day is collected. It's at four water reclamation centers. They purify the black wastewater so thoroughly that it can be released into the Han River. The secret wasn't filtering, but rather having microorganisms consume it. Most of the dirt in wastewater is dissolved, so it can't be filtered out with a sieve. Therefore, they inject air to cultivate a large number of microorganisms, which then consume the organic matter. Nowadays, they're apparently burying these facilities entirely underground and covering the top with parks.

Breaking down organic matter with microorganisms, how efficient! It's brilliant wisdom to put city infrastructure underground and even create parks, hmm!

There are two main sewage treatment methods: combined systems, which treat rainwater and sewage together, and separate systems, which treat them separately. Tokyo's combined sewer system caused embarrassment during the Olympic triathlon. When it rains heavily, combined systems can overflow their treatment capacity and discharge directly, and during the games, the odor from such a discharge was quite noticeable.

Whoa, it's amazing that it doesn't just filter wastewater but has microorganisms eat it up ๐ณ
