In the later stages, getting grazed by enemy fire means instant death, so you'll need to break the barrier, overpower them with damage, or use graze mechanics... Or maybe it's not just the later stages. If you try the "Lunatic" difficulty in "Isekai Miko Returns" (Chapter 2), you'll immediately understand what "first strike wins" means. Seriously, my Seirei got taken out not by the central boss, but by focused fire from the fairies on both sides!
