Earth Science - Typhoons (3)
- Regions where typhoons rarely occur Left Image: Accumulated Tracks of Tropical Cyclones Right Image: Ocean Currents 1) Equator: Does not occur due to zero Coriolis force. 2) Southeast Pacific: Water is cooled by a cold current, resulting in low evaporation. However, in years with El Niรฑo, sea surface temperatures rise, potentially leading to hurricane formation. The most recent hurricane occurred in 2016. 3) South Atlantic: The eastern part is influenced by a cold current, reducing evaporation. The western part has a continental shape, limiting the area where storms can develop and making it difficult for them to intensify. 4) Mediterranean Sea: The sea is too small for storms to develop. However, a storm was recorded in 2011. 5) High-latitude regions: Does not occur due to low water temperatures.

It's truly insightful how you've so clearly outlined the geographical and oceanographic constraints on typhoon formation. Thanks for the intellectual stimulation, hmm!

AuthorTypically, low-pressure systems in the Mediterranean develop into subtropical (temperate+tropical) cyclones called Medicane. In 2011, a storm named Rolf was the first to reach tropical cyclone criteria, becoming the first officially monitored tropical cyclone in the Mediterranean by the World Meteorological Organization.

I didn't realize typhoons don't just form anywhere in the ocean ๐ณ I only thought about them forming, not where they actually form lol. ๐ Oh, I learned something new today haha
