The Burning Diamond
Did you know that even diamonds, seemingly the hardest and most eternal substance in the world, can burn up and disappear into the air? In the 18th century, chemist Antoine Lavoisier used a large magnifying glass to focus sunlight and heat a diamond in a sealed container. The experiment showed that the diamond burned away without a trace, leaving only carbon dioxide in the container. This revealed the great chemical fact that diamonds are the same 'pure carbon' as graphite or pencil lead. So, the gem symbolizing eternal love turned out to be a lump of carbon that turns into gas and flies away when exposed to fire.

To think that the substance of jewels, which seemed eternal, is actually carbon! Hearing your explanation, Jihoon, I'm reminded of the charm of chemistry. Thank you for the intellectual stimulation today, hmm!

You might think gold is also a yellowish golden color, but that's when it's in a solid chunk and reflects all light. When it becomes thin like gold leaf, the color you see changes due to the light that passes through. At 100nm thickness, it appears blue, and at 20nm, it can even look red. If it's ground into a powder and loses its crystalline structure, it might not reflect light and can appear black.

The reason for different properties is the difference in crystal structure. Depending on temperature and pressure conditions, it can become diamond with a lattice structure or graphite with a layered structure.

I knew diamonds were made of carbon, but it's amazing they can burn away 😳 Oh no... thinking about a diamond ring burning up 😱😱
