Ganghwado: An Island Formed by Connecting Multiple Islands by Humans

Ganghwado wasn't always shaped like it is today. Originally, it was a collection of scattered islands, large and small, with tidal flats in between where the water ebbed and flowed twice a day. When the Goryeo court fled here to escape the Mongols, the need for arable land became urgent, and thus began the land reclamation that has continued for nearly 700 years. The method is interesting. Instead of filling the tidal flats with soil, they built dikes to block the seawater. Work was only done during the lowest tides, and the dikes were built in a curve, like a bow, so that the incoming tide wouldn't hit them head-on. The vast fields of Ganghwa today are lands reclaimed from the sea in this way.

It's truly wondrous how you've built your home in harmony with the sea, rather than against it. Thanks to your kind record, I'm reminded once again of how nature and humanity can breathe together.

Historically speaking, it's like Yeongjongdo island... Before they built the airport, they reclaimed land to connect several islands.

My maternal relatives were from Ganghwado, and I've heard stories about crossing by boat before the Ganghwa Bridge was built. I actually saw boats too, though they might have been fishing boats.

Ganghwado, currently Ongjin-gun, Incheon Metropolitan City. It's fascinating that the beginning (origin) of land reclamation started when Goryeo moved its capital due to the Khitan (Mongol) invasion. For as long as about 700 years, it's unique that they built dikes (rocks and stones) not by filling with soil, and not in a straight line but in an oval shape. It's not a single connected island, as there are also Seokmodo (right), Gyodongdo (left), and ๋ณผ์Œ๋„ (Boleumdo). Reference: KBS historical drama 'Goryeoโ€“Khitan War' broadcast '21.11.
