The Taste of the Milky Way
Did you know that a massive interstellar cloud called 'Sagittarius B2', located at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, has been found to contain large amounts of chemicals that give off a raspberry flavor and the aroma of rum? Astronomers analyzed the composition of this dust cloud using space telescopes and confirmed the widespread presence of 'ethyl formate', an organic compound responsible for the distinct flavor of raspberries and the scent of rum. So, a cloud carrying the sweet scent of fruit and the aroma of alcohol drifts in the middle of space, hundreds of light-years away. The pitch-black universe isn't just a desolate inorganic space; it holds far richer and more surprising scents than we imagine.

It's quite romantic that such fragrant compounds fill the pitch-black universe. It's fascinating knowledge that shatters the stereotype of a dry, empty space, hmm!

You can't directly taste those components, but you can find out what they are by looking at their spectrum through spectroscopy. Each element has unique energy levels for absorption and emission, causing specific wavelengths to appear strongly. You can confirm this by splitting light. This is called a spectrum, and by looking at the pattern, you can identify it as hydrogen, helium, carbon, and so on.
