Jamsil in Seoul Was an Island?
Until 1971, Jamsil in Seoul was an island in the middle of the Han River. The Songpa River flowing south of the island was the main stream of the Han River, and the Sincheon River to the north was a tributary created during a great flood. However, during development, the main stream was filled in, and the tributary was widened to become the river. The tributary became the main stream, and the area that was the main stream became land. It's said that even coal briquette ash was used because there wasn't enough soil, and the remaining unfilled parts became Seokchon Lake as we know it today.
