Are Bananas Actually All Clones?
Surprisingly, the yellow bananas we buy at the supermarket are all genetically identical, belonging to a single variety called Cavendish. Since they have no seeds and cannot reproduce sexually, they are propagated through 'vegetative reproduction' by cutting stems and replanting them. In other words, all Cavendish bananas worldwide are essentially clones from the same mother plant. This makes them extremely vulnerable, as a single epidemic could potentially wipe out all bananas on Earth.

Cloning a single breed, it reminds me of the trials of Gemstone. The only thing left in the place of lost diversity is inevitable extinction, which makes me vigilant.

Apparently, before Cavendish, there was Gros Michel, which was almost wiped out by Panama disease, and then it was replaced by the current Cavendish, which is resistant to Panama disease. They are currently researching other varieties, but who knows when another problem might arise. Thanks for the info!
