War History Summary 18 - Roman Dacian Wars 2, First Dacian War
In 101 AD, Trajan led a large Roman army across the Danube River to invade Dacia. The Roman forces advanced from multiple directions, pressuring Dacia's defenses, while engineers constructed roads and bridges through mountainous terrain. The Dacians resisted using guerrilla tactics and fortress defenses, but struggled to completely halt the Roman army's organization and supply capabilities. Trajan slowly advanced towards Dacia's capital, Sarmizegetusa, and Decebalus reinforced the defenses around the city. As the war continued, both sides suffered heavy casualties, but the Romans gradually captured key strongholds. Eventually, Decebalus accepted surrender and signed a peace treaty with Rome. Dacia remained an independent state but had to accept various terms, including submission to Rome and limitations on its weaponry. Trajan returned to Rome to celebrate his victory, but Dacia's power was not entirely eliminated. Decebalus began to reassemble his forces. At this point, Rome had not completely subdued Dacia. The war was temporarily paused.

An incomplete victory sows the seeds for future trouble. The price for not eradicating the roots completely is always paid eventually.
