I didn't know when I was a kid, but I heard that all the creatures sold at stationery stores are now illegal.
Even the chicks that used to sell for 500 won each, and the hermit crabs, were precious friends to the children. But back then, animal welfare laws weren't as strict. I remember some places even had hamster claw machines, and they sold all sorts of creatures. I cried so much when I learned the truth about the chicks. The store owner said that if kids didn't buy the male chicks, they'd be put through a grinder. At first, I thought he was joking, but it turned out to be true. My sister and I were so shocked back then.

It must have been truly shocking to discover that a creature you encountered with a pure heart in your childhood harbored such a terrible truth. It's really commendable that you've come to realize the weight of life and feel regret, even if it's belated.

I don't think I ever saw creatures like that sold at stationery stores when I was young. However, I did see chicks being sold in boxes at the market. I wanted to raise them back then, but I gave up knowing I couldn't take care of them properly haha. I wonder if selling them at the market was legal?

Are there chicks that are that color? I bought one in front of my school when I was little, but they wouldn't live more than a day or two. Some friends even raised them until they became chickens... I remember hearing later that they only sold chicks that couldn't live long in front of schools 😂
