Rosalia Lombardo

She was an Italian girl born in 1918 who died of pneumonia at the age of 1. Her parents, heartbroken, decided to preserve her body. They asked taxidermist Alfredo Salafia to mummify her. In 1933, she began to gain fame because she looked like a child who had just passed away or was asleep. When rumors spread that she was a wax doll, a CT scan was performed, revealing that her internal organs were perfectly preserved as shown in the photo. The mystery was solved in 2009 when the taxidermist's notes were discovered, revealing that among various components, zinc salts had turned her skin into a wax-like substance. However, her body is now slowly decaying, so the Palermo Cathedral is keeping her in a nitrogen-filled, wax-sealed coffin.
