Hurricane Nora, the 3rd Central Pacific Hurricane, which formed on September 23rd, has now crossed the International Date Line into the typhoon region today, becoming the 28th typhoon. - 9/10 Tropical disturbance formed off the coast of Mexico, moving west. - 9/23 Developed into a hurricane near Hawaii, moving west. - 10/5 Crossed the International Date Line. Assigned a typhoon number. - The typhoon name remains 'Noro' from its hurricane designation. - Subsequent typhoons are numbered sequentially and retain their names. * Central Pacific Hurricane Naming Convention - 4 sets of 12 names, totaling 48 names prepared. - All names are used sequentially. - 4-5 storms form in the Central Pacific annually. - Names do not reset to 'A' at the start of a new year. - Hawaiian names are used. - Words starting with A, E, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, P, U, W. - Hurricanes causing severe damage are retired, similar to typhoons.
