Helpful Strategy Guide
The main focus is on upgrading the Cathedral, so start by using diamonds to get it to level 8. After that, push through as much of the missed story as possible. Once you've leveled the Cathedral to 15, get stronger by doing various sub-quests. When you feel like you're getting somewhere, use the Cathedral momentum to push it to level 20.

The beginning is super easy, but from level 15 to level 18 it gets tough, so I just abandoned it at a low level.

Seems like you need to keep an eye on the time occasionally. I completed level 21 in 25 days. I decided to finish it since it seemed too hard to reach level 24. Someone mentioned it was difficult to complete level 24 without paying, but I think it's possible if you spend quite a bit of time on it occasionally.
