Reaction Formation Defense Mechanism

A psychological defense mechanism proposed by Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis. When a person experiences intense impulses, desires, or emotions that cannot be accepted by their own reason or social morality, they adopt completely opposite attitudes and behaviors at the conscious level to conceal them and reduce the resulting anxiety. Simply put, it's a psychological form of 'saying one thing and meaning another' or 'being two-faced'. How it Works: Why does this happen? 1. Internal Repression: True feelings that are felt as shameful, fearful, or immoral (e.g., hatred, extreme dependency, sexual urges) exist in the subconscious. 2. Anxiety Alarm: The brain recognizes that these feelings might lead to punishment or social condemnation, triggering immense anxiety. 3. Extreme Conversion: To ensure this 'dangerous thought' is never exposed, the brain builds a strong barrier, directly twisting it into the opposite extreme behavior, making oneself appear safe. To identify if someone is using reaction formation, you can observe two key indicators: 1. Exaggerated Behavior: Their actions often seem overly forced or rigidly extreme, lacking natural emotional expression. For example, not just polite, but excessively courteous to the point of awkwardness and distance. 2. Internal Conflict: Individuals in this state long-term experience extreme internal depletion and fatigue. Because true emotions are forcibly suppressed, energy constantly clashes within, making them prone to psychological symptoms like anxiety, avoidance, or depression.

Common examples from daily life: • Love-Hate Relationship: A boy secretly has a crush on a female classmate, but to hide his shyness and fear of rejection, he deliberately teases or mocks her. • Excessive Affection: A daughter-in-law actually despises her mother-in-law but, due to societal moral expectations (superego) of filial piety, she acts overly attentive and unnaturally polite towards her. • Homophobia/Sexual Repression: Individuals who strongly oppose and criticize homosexuality or sexual liberation in public might actually be suppressing intense homosexual tendencies or sexual desires within their subconscious. • Arrogance Hiding Inferiority: Someone deeply insecure and afraid of being looked down upon often outwardly behaves arrogantly and imperiously. • Pushing Away with Coldness: Despite caring deeply for someone to the point of obsession, they deliberately act cold and push the person far away out of fear of getting hurt.
