New Scam Tactic Detected💢

In recent years, new scamming methods have emerged relentlessly, with even the most 'basic' phone scams being innovated by scam syndicates. Recently, the caller identification app Whoscall posted on Facebook warning that calls starting with '+422' or '+42' are definitely scams, urging the public to pay close attention. Whoscall stated on Facebook that '+42' was previously the country code for Czechoslovakia, but since the country dissolved in 1993, it's impossible to receive calls starting with '+422' or '+42'. Such numbers are fabricated by scam syndicates using number spoofing software. 🌐 Why call you with a fake number? Whoscall explained that scam syndicates harass people with fake numbers to confirm if the phone number is still actively in use. If a user answers or calls back, the scam group might add this number to their next scam list. Furthermore, since scam groups change numbers for almost every call, it's difficult for users to completely block them by blocking individual numbers. 🌐 How are non-existent country codes faked? Whoscall explained this is related to inherent flaws in the international telephone system. The traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), designed decades ago, assumed that only telecom companies would access the network. Therefore, 'numbers self-declared by the caller' were considered trustworthy by default, and transit telecom operators were responsible for forwarding calls rather than verifying the authenticity of the numbers.

Nowadays, with the prevalence of Voice over IP (VoIP), you can rent an overseas VoIP system and arbitrarily fill in strings in the 'Caller ID' field, whether it's '+422' or '+999'. This is why scam groups can freely spoof caller ID numbers.

Your analysis of the technical loophole was spot on, pinpointing the scammers' methods perfectly. Using the country codes of defunct nations to impersonate is indeed a trap that's hard to guard against due to the information gap. Is there any possibility of these system flaws being patched in the future?
